CNN —At least 11 people have died, 20 are missing and more than 2,000 have been left homeless after an “extratropical cyclone” hit Brazil’s Rio Grande Do Sul, local authorities say. “Our priority at the moment is to find the missing and save people who may still be stranded by the floods.” Leite wrote in a statement. Extreme weather around the world is becoming more intense and more frequent against the backdrop of a fast-warming climate. The proportion of high-intensity hurricanes, or tropical cyclones, has increased due to the warmer global temperatures, according to the UN. Scientists have also found that the storms are more likely to stall and lead to devastating rainfall and they last longer after making landfall.

While Hollywood deals with the first TV and movie writers’ strike in 15 years, the wealth of content that we have available to us is a good reminder of the creativity those writers have put into making the shows and movies we love. Something to sip on…Corey Mylchreest as Young King George, India Amarteifio as Young Queen Charlotte in episode 101 of "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." Liam Daniel/NetflixOne of the reasons the strike is even happening is because streaming has changed the entertainment industry so much that writers say their wages are being adversely affected through shorter seasons and changing distribution models. Those individuals can’t work – and some of our favorite shows will be delayed – unless writers and studios reach a new agreement soon. In the meantime, catch up on some brilliant shows you’ve missed.

‘Fatal Attraction’ Review: Not Another Potboiler

Lizzy Caplan and Joshua Jackson Photo: Paramount+Adrian Lyne ’s steamy, scary, sordid “Fatal Attraction” was an era-defining film, a philanderer’s horror feature, an AIDS allegory and a palliative for those left reeling by campaigns for sexual equality. How were we supposed to read Glenn Close ’s Alex Forrest, after all, other than as the successful single woman as a knife-wielding monster, i.e., the end result of feminism? Fatal Attraction Begins Sunday, Paramount+It was a movie that got a lot more mileage out of controversy than quality, however, and while the new production of “Fatal Attraction” is part of a seemingly desperate effort by Paramount to remake its old theatrical titles for TV (“The Italian Job,” “Flashdance,” “The Parallax View”), co-developer and writer Alexandra Cunningham ’s first-rate reimagining is far more complex, engrossing and adult than the 1987 original. And it shows that there was much more to be mined out of James Dearden ’s Oscar-nominated screenplay than Mr. Lyne probably ever imagined.
A CERTAIN style move terrifies countless men with a passing interest in fashion. Some would sooner streak through Times Square than be seen sporting this “faux pas.” The avoid-at-all-costs abomination? Wearing black and navy together. With a discipline that would impress a four-star general, guys both young and old abide by such staid rules on not mixing certain colors. Ask them to wear, say, green head-to-toe and you might witness a conniption.
‘Fatal Attraction’ Review: Here’s Why She Did It

So Alexandra Cunningham (“Dirty John,” “Desperate Housewives”) and Kevin J. Hynes (“Perry Mason”), working with the film’s writer, James Dearden, have reimagined “Fatal Attraction” in myriad ways, none of which are erotic and few of which are thrilling. Dan is up for parole because in this new universe, he has served 15 years for the murder of his stalker, Alex Forrest (Lizzy Caplan). The temporal shifts also serve to educate both Dan and the audience about the noxious privilege and entitlement that precipitated his downfall. But apparently converting “Fatal Attraction” into a reasonably diverting crime drama wasn’t enough to remove the stain of the original. Ellen’s research leads her to reassess the behavior of her father’s murdered nemesis, and the greatest labor this “Fatal Attraction” takes on is its effort to turn Alex into an understandable, even sympathetic, character.

Despite spray tans and brief stints as a blonde, she could rarely convince producers to see her as the heroine, the nice girl. “That’s the journey of every brunette.”The joke came by way of a video call in early April from her home in North London. (She and her husband, the English actor Tom Riley, spend half the year there and the other half in Los Angeles.) Jesse Eisenberg, her co-star in the FX limited series “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” expressed a similar observation. “She has such an unusual, distinctive quality of world weariness and humor, jadedness, but also hopefulness,” he said in a phone interview.
NECK AND NECK Two shirts, two collars—a sturdy design (left) and a flat camp style (right). Even if none ring a bell, chances are you’ve seen the style, distinguished by a splayed, notched collar that exposes clavicles and lies pancake-flat against the chest. Today’s camp styles range from $990 Celine designs with palm-tree accents right through to $33 Old Navy takes. Athleisure giant Lululemon offers a head-scratching version in a sweat-wicking fabric better suited to gym clothes. Countless trendy brands sell few other collar styles come spring and summer.
The Brooklyn writer and brand consultant, 33, has lately been trying to cut down on her screen time, so she bought an analog watch—specifically a 1979 Rolex Lady-Datejust. “That I have one less reason to pull [my phone] out of my pocket is a relief,” she said. Ms. Baxter is among the many women who, as a form of self-care, are shunning techy time-tellers and opting for analog watches (old-school tickers that actually tick). It’s a move Deepika Chopra, a Los Angeles holistic psychologist, recommends to clients experiencing smartphone or social-media overload. Janet Ozzard, 58, felt a sense of freedom after ditching her digital tracker for Shinola’s mechanical Birdy watch earlier this year.
Starbucks' new CEO Laxman Narasimhan announced he'll spend a half-day every month pulling coffees. Seven Starbucks stores announced they have begun the unionization process Thursday. During the annual Starbucks shareholder meeting Thursday, Starbucks Workers United announced seven new stores had filed for union elections. Workers at those stores said they hope the move shows that the labor movement at Starbucks isn't lost on Middle America. "Union Starbucks partners are here to stay."
"But senior dogs are so lovely, and it's well worth the cost to go the extra mile for them." Whatever furry friend happens to be snoozing on your couch, caring for senior dogs can get pricey. ASK FOR HELPIf your senior dog needs a medical treatment you just cannot afford, do not give up hope. The same principles apply to your furry companion, which is why one solution is a "savings account specifically set aside for your pet's medical care," said Dr. Melvin. "I can't wait for my next senior dog, because they are so precious," she said.
LOW-KEY LUXURY At the fall fashion shows, many designers proposed quiet, classic clothes rife with sophistication. From left: fall looks from Fendi, the Row and Loro Piana. This season put an end to that. Perhaps inspired by political and economic uncertainty, or maybe by the fact that women exist in the tangible world again, not just behind filtered screens, brands including Saint Laurent, the Row, Bottega Veneta and Fendi turned out exquisitely wearable, sometimes understated clothes. The shift in tone resonated with guests, some of whom are cautiously optimistic it might last beyond this crucial season for the brand.
